Plants We Eat: Sensory Observation Activity

I found these tubes on Amazon, and I thought they would be perfect for our nature class. But you could easily recreate this with items you have at home—tall, wide-mouth glass jars or even plastic containers would work.

We’ve spent the last couple of weeks learning all about plants and trees, so this week’s activity was to explore plants that we eat. I filled the tubes with lettuce, peppers, carrots, and rosemary.

The kids' job was to observe what was inside each tube and then draw what they saw. This activity really helped them slow down, focus on the details, and make the connection between nature and the food we eat!

Want more ideas? Try filling your sensory containers with pinecones, acorns, dried flowers, leaves, seeds, pebbles, or small rocks, tree, bark, moss, twigs, or small branches, and herbs! You can buy the tubes here.

It’s such a simple and fun way to encourage curiosity and creativity in nature!
